PORTRAIT PAINTING FROM YOUR PHOTO (AVAILABLE FRAMED or UNFRAMED)
Works are painted in oils or acrylics and made to order. John uses the traditional oil painting technique called "alla prima" which captures the sense of spontaneity of the oil painting process. His acrylic paintings are done in glazing layers building color upon color.
HOW JOHN PAINTS A PORTRAIT
There are many portrait artist online today that make a photocopy transfer of your photo on canvass or paper and digitally retouch your photo adding Photoshop effects instead of actually painting it. This is a way of producing a quickly made inexpensive portrait representation. This type of portrait is done by pushing a button on the computer to add and simulate art brushstrokes. It is not the same as a portrait painted by hand from either a photo or from an actual sitting with the model. Painting a portrait by hand and eye is a refined skill which takes decades to develop and learn. It is a time consuming process from the beginning to the completion of the final finished work. Unfortunately this is why John cannot compete on pricing against computer generated art. John produces a portrait the same way as that of portraits that you would find in a museum or fine art gallery by the old masters and thus they have greater value.
WHICH PHOTOS CAN WORK
John works from all types of photos, including selfies from your cell phone as long as they are in focus. He also works from direct photos supplied such as printed family photos. Photos needs to be a good resolution and size, plus clear enough to see details such as small facial features. You can tell if a picture is good by zooming in on a detail such as an eye or the lips to see if it is blurry. If you aren't sure if your digital or printed photo is acceptable, then simply send it to John at JohnClancyArt@gmail.com, and John will let you know if it is useable.
CHOOSING THE SIZE
Normally John paints portraits at life-size. However, he also will do portraits as small as 3” x 4” (Miniature Portraits) Typically the size for a portrait of just the head should be done on a canvass 16” x 20”. A portrait of the head, shoulders and torso typically is 24” x 30”. For group portraits or multiple heads the size TBD.
HOW LONG DOES A PORTRAIT TAKE?
It will take approximately a month from receiving your referenced photography till the completion of the finished work. About a week of that time is devoted to make sure that the painting is completely dry and ready to be packed for shipping to you.
