Whispers in Stone
The heart of my artwork lies in the transformation of a painting of stone into something alive. Each painting presents a visage or creature that seems to breathe, its eyes rendered with an almost startling realism. This attention to detail invites the viewer to engage deeply, as if each painted figure holds a story waiting to be unraveled. The eyes, often the most expressive feat
The collection of paintings called "Shaman Vibes" draws on several rich cultural influences, particularly from the Baluba, Guro, and Dan people of Africa. Each of these cultures has a unique artistic and spiritual heritage that is reflected in the spiritual masks that inspired the paintings.
1. Baluba People's Influence: The Baluba people are known for their intricate masks that often embody ancestral spirits. These masks play a significant role in ceremonial practices and are characterized by geometric patterns and vibrant colors. In "Shaman Vibes," the resemblance to these masks may be depicted through bold, abstract forms that capture the essence of spiritual connection and ancestral reverence.
2. Guro People: The Guro people, from Côte d'Ivoire, create masks that are known for their expressive features and symbolic meanings, often used in rituals and performances. Their art emphasizes transformation, spirituality, and the importance of the spiritual realm. The paintings likely incorporate these themes, showcasing shaman musicians or figures that channel this transformative spirit through music.
3. Dan People: The Dan people's masks are highly regarded for their craftsmanship and unique representations of human emotions. These masks are often used in dance and storytelling, serving as a medium for communication between the spiritual and physical worlds. The influence of Dan aesthetics in "Shaman Vibes" can be observed in how the musicians are portrayed, perhaps mimicking dance postures or facial expressions seen in traditional Dan performances.
4. Textile Designs: In addition to the spiritual masks, the collection infuses elements of each culture's textile designs. These textiles often feature intricate patterns and vibrant colors, serving both functional and decorative purposes in traditional clothing. The incorporation of these textile designs into the paintings enhances the visual richness and cultural authenticity of "Shaman Vibes," allowing viewers to appreciate the craftsmanship inherent in these artistic practices.
5. Modern and Surrealist Elements: By including modern shaman musicians playing both classic and surrealist instruments, the collection presents a contemporary interpretation of these traditional influences. This fusion of modernity with cultural heritage embraces a new narrative, highlighting the dynamic and evolving nature of spirituality and artistic expression.
In summary, "Shaman Vibes" is a vibrant homage to the spiritual and artistic traditions of the Baluba, Guro, and Dan people, while simultaneously exploring the intersection of these rich cultural influences with contemporary themes in art and music.
"Red Haired Girl"
Limited Edition Print on Canvas
20" x 24"
Inspired by an image I found of a girl with red hair in a green dress. I just had to paint it! In this painting, I modeled the background to add a mysterious quality to it. I is amazing how so many people tell me that the girl looks like one of their nieces or cousins.
"Secret Places"
Limited Edition Print on Canvas
24" x 20"
This painting was inspired believe it or not by moss growing on rocks. I liked the way the early morning sun light glowed on them. I began this painting by doing several thum nail sketches working out a composition that I liked. What would be better than to add a wolf to se off the theme "Secret Places"
Artist Statement
I am currently doing a series of paintings titled "Blossoms of Elegance" which are available and on display at Waterkolours Fine Art Gallery in Memphis, TN.

In my series titled "Blossoms of Elegance," I celebrate the beauty, strength, and sophistication of women of color, each adorned with enchanting flowers like daisies and roses. Every woman depicted in this collection embodies grace and resilience, cherishing both her individuality and the rich cultural heritage that she represents.
The flowers in this series serve a dual purpose; they are not only visual embellishments but also symbols infused with hidden meanings. Daisies, often representing innocence and purity, complement the vibrant spirit of the women, while roses symbolize love, passion, and the complexity of human emotions. By intertwining these flowers with compelling portraits, I aim to convey a narrative that transcends the canvas—highlighting the elegance and depth of the subjects while inviting viewers to reflect on their own interpretations and connections.
"Blossoms of Elegance" is more than a celebration of beauty; it is a fusion of art, culture, and symbolism that honors the multifaceted essence of womanhood. As each painting unfolds, I strive to create a dialogue that resonates with viewers, evoking a sense of empowerment and appreciation for the serene yet powerful presence of these women in our world.
